At the same time, municipal governments face real challenges: relationships between elected officials and civil servants can be tense, collaboration across departments or with the private sector and other levels of government can fall short, and many cities simply don’t have the time or capacity to take on complex, systems-level change.

That’s why we started City Action Lab.

We’re an urban research and consulting collective. We work across the urban ecosystem to tackle tough problems, bring people together, and turn good ideas into practical solutions. Our goal is to help local governments make meaningful progress—quickly, collaboratively, and with lasting impact.
